Brian Auten’s CV

Brian Auten is a career counterintelligence analyst who retired from the Federal Bureau of Investigation in 2026 after a 20+ year career working Russian counterintelligence and counterespionage investigations. He also served as an analyst supervisor and a chief of staff. While in the FBI, Auten also provided CI lectures at, among other places, JCITA and National Defense University.

Auten has taught as an adjunct professor at the University of Hull (UK), California State University at San Bernardino (CSUSB), and, most recently, in Patrick Henry College's Strategic Intelligence program. He is the author of Carter's Conversion: The Hardening of US Defense Policy (2008), and has also published articles in Comparative Strategy and Studies in Conflict and Terrorism. He has a Ph.D. in International Politics and Strategic Studies from the University of Reading (UK), a MA in National Security Studies from CSUSB, and a BA in History from the University of California at Santa Cruz.
