Secrecy News today has two timely articles. The first is on selected declassification and the “Nunez Memo.” The second by the Jason’s is on artificial intelligence (AI) for healthcare.

For those of you that are not aware of the “JASONs,” they are an independent group of elite scientists which advises the USG on matters relating to S&T, mostly of a sensitive, often classified nature. They  advised the Bureau during my time in that organization on a number of S&T topics. The group was created to get a younger generation of scientists involved in advising the government and was established in 1960. There are, at any one time, between 30 and 60 members. One of their first consults to make it into the public domain was on the science associated with Secretary of Defense McNamara’s Line, an electronic barrier constructed during the Vietnam War. Although most of its research is military-focused, the JASONs also produced early work on the science of global warming and acid rain. Current unclassified research interests include health informatics, cyberwarfare, and renewable energy.
